In preparations for our parish centennial in 2019, Holy Trinity Church in Baltimore, MD has begun the second phase of major renovations of the church interior. The scaffolding has been installed throughout the interior of the church. A large "dancefloor" has been placed at the top of the scaffolding for work on the ceiling. Throughout June and July, the plaster in many areas on the ceiling and the walls will be repaired and prepared for painting. All other areas will be scraped, skimmed and primed. Afterwards the final coat of paint will be applied. Then, by early August new icons will be installed on the ceiling and a new border design will be placed throughout the church. Regardless of the scaffolding, we will continue to serve Divine Liturgy in the church on Sundays throughout the summer. However, because of the scaffolding in the sanctuary, we have placed a small table - to serve as the altar - the Seven-Candle stand and other icons in the center of the church for Divine Services. It is very important for us to pray in the church throughout this restoration work, especially to ask God to bless our efforts in beautifying His holy temple. In addition to your prayers, we also need your generous donations. This Phase II of our restoration project will cost approximately $300,000. Phase I - Cleaning, Restoration, Beautification

July - December 2017

The cleaning and restoration of eight large icons on the east, north and south walls of the church was completed from July into December 2017. Lead iconographer, Katerina Spilio of Byzantium Art Studio Decorative and Conservation Arts (http://www.byzantiumarts.com/), and her fellow artists cleaned and enhanced the beauty of the icons. First they removed the grime and old varnish. This made for the dramatic reveal of the colors. Then, they applied an isolation varnish, one that is archival and reversible, with UV protection. This will allow future conservationists the opportunity to reverse any or all of the enhancements to the icon if they so choose. Next they enhanced the icons with oil and acrylic paints to bring them to a better liturgical aesthetic quality:

  • They changed the halos to be more appropriately placed, making the icons more harmonious.
  • New gold was place on the icons, because the previous gold was old and thin.
  • All of the shading on the original version was made with black paint. This was toned down by going over all of it with dark browns, blues, greens, reds and plums, as appropriate, to make the icons softer.
  • The colors in general were very bright - bright yellows, pinks and reds especially. Katerina and her artists changed the bright colors, to Byzantine colors - yellow ochre, raw sienna, red oxide and burnt sienna, etc. In general, the entire color palette was toned down to be earthy and harmonious with Byzantine icons.
  • All of the faces were worked on subtly to make them less harsh. Much work was done on changing the eyes to be more pious and Byzantine. Especially Mary's hands were also made more delicate.
  • Highlights were added to many robes, so that the light emanates from the center of the icons.
  • The perspective was also adjusted.
  • The inscriptions were added to the icons in both English and Church Slavonic.
  • Byzantine red borders around the icons will also be added later.
  • Gold composite was added to the entire background of the icons of Mary with Child and the Resurrection.

The goal of Phase I was to create a transitional style that was neither austerely Byzantine, but no longer classic, either. Katerina and her artists made some corrections to the scale, perspective, shading and light. They tried to get the icons closer in style to the icons on the iconostasis. This will make the entire church more harmonious in style.
